Lavrov: Russia will agree to mutual security guarantees if a peaceful settlement is reached in Ukraine

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has confirmed that his country will agree to mutual security guarantees as soon as a peaceful settlement is reached in Ukraine.

In an interview with the Russian newspaper Izvestia, Lavrov pointed to the Chinese document that included an analysis of the reasons for what is happening in Ukraine and the need to eliminate these reasons, that is, it was based on a logic that ranges from general to particular. It states that there is a disturbance of the security situation in Europe and the world caused by non-fulfillment of the UN Charter, and this is Russia’s position as well.

The Chinese document also according to Lavrov states that the unilateral sanctions that the West has begun to intensively adopt are a nuisance that must be removed so we must agree to ensure security equally for all participants in the settlement process. These principles cannot be put into practice without sitting down at a negotiating table based on a serious analysis of existing security problems, recognition of security threats and realities on the ground, ensuring Russia’s legitimate security interests, stressing “his country’s readiness to ensure the legitimate interests and safety of other participants in the process”.

In February last year, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs published a 12-point statement on a political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, including the need to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states, the resumption of direct dialogue between Moscow and Kiev, and the call to prevent further escalation.

Speaking about the Crocus terrorist attack, Lavrov said that the West is trying to convince Russia that Ukraine has nothing to do with the terrorist operation, but Moscow cannot exclude this before the investigation is completed, especially that the people who committed the attack were trying to escape towards Ukraine when they were arrested.
