Lavrov: Russia and the GCC countries support Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed the support of his country and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries for Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and the need for a political solution to the crisis in it.

Lavrov said during a press conference today in Moscow at the end of the sixth round of the strategic dialogue between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council: “We talked in detail about the situation in Syria, and we have a common position to support its sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and support the right of Syrians to decide the future of their country, and we stressed the solution.”

On the other hand, Lavrov revealed the growth of trade exchange between Russia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries to more than $11 billion, and the maintenance of a positive trend in mutual trade, which increased over the past year by more than 6 percent compared to the year before.

Lavrov stressed that the relations between Russia and the Gulf states are based on respect, expressing his country’s readiness to continue selling grain to Arab partners and to fulfill all its obligations and meet all needs, pointing out that there are no obstacles to that.

Lavrov pointed out that the participants in the dialogue between Russia and the GCC states stressed that there is no alternative to respecting the basic principles of communication between states and international law enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

On the other hand, the Russian Foreign Minister welcomed the resumption of bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran on the tenth of last March under the auspices of China, considering that their resumption would contribute to creating a positive atmosphere in the entire region.
