Lavrov, Pedersen Discuss Elimination of Terrorism, Restoration of Security to Syria

MOSCOW- Russia Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen affirmed the necessity of eliminating terrorism completely and restoring security and stability to Syria along with respecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to SANA.

Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that during their meeting on Monday, both sides exchanged viewpoints in details on “prospects of pushing the political process forwards led by the Syrians themselves and with the help of the UN based on the Security Council’s resolution no. 2254 and they also discussed complete eradication of terrorism.”

Restoring security and stability to Syria, along with respecting its sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity were also on the table, according to the statement.

The statement indicated that Lavrov and Pedersen also, during their talks, underlined the importance of launching the work of the committee to discuss the constitution, which has gained the support of all the Syrian parties, soonest possible.

Earlier on Monday, Pedersen started a visit to Russia during which he held talks with Lavrov and Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
