CAMBODIA,(ST)_ ” Clinton stressed that the Geneva statement of the working group on Syria is still of interest to the United States,” said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, asserting that such an interest will achieve nothing, as long as there are strict warnings and deadlines.
In statements to press men, in Cambodia on Tuesday, Minister Lavrov added that he had discussed with his American peer Hilary Clinton the crisis in Syria.
Minister Lavrov pointed out that the alliance of Doha contradicts in its objectives Geneva Document, reiterating that no resolutions should be taken on behalf of the Syrian people, calling for pressure to be put on all to sit at the dialogue table to find a solution to the crisis.
Concerning the Israeli aggression on Gaza, Lavrov said that “Russia proposes the convening of a meeting for the International Quartet Committee in the light of the crisis in Gaza,” noting that the most important thing now is to reach a “truce” between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
“We support the Arab initiatives, but we simultaneously send a signal to the UN Security Council where a draft document calls for Palestinians and Israelis to the truce is being discussed”, Lavrov added.
He continued that Moscow hopes to discuss a meeting of the Middle East Quartet mediating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict after the Gaza crisis is settled.
