Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stressed the need to stop the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, indicating that these attacks will be discussed at the United Nations, especially the recent attack on Damascus International Airport.
Lavrov said during a press conference with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian in Tehran today: “The Israeli bombing of Damascus International Airport is a serious incident that led to the suspension of the airport’s work and the damage to the delivery of humanitarian shipments by air, which is unacceptable.”
Lavrov indicated that Russia’s position is clear towards resolving the crisis in Syria in accordance with UN Resolution 2254, which is based on the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.
Lavrov pointed out that Moscow and Tehran agreed on the need for the international community to contribute to the implementation of reconstruction projects in Syria and to facilitate the return of the displaced and refugees, noting that Western countries continue to obstruct this and put pressure on UN organizations and politicize their work in this context.
With regard to the negotiations to revive the Iranian nuclear agreement, Lavrov stressed that Russia will seek to resume the agreement in its original form and restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action without exceptions and additions, pointing out that Moscow hopes that Washington will make a logical choice and cancel all sanctions imposed on Iran.
Lavrov indicated that relations between Tehran and Moscow have reached the highest point in their history and will achieve further progress, indicating that work is underway to prepare a comprehensive document for strategic cooperation between them.
Regarding Western allegations that the Russian military operation in Ukraine has caused a food crisis in the world, Lavrov pointed out that there is no relationship between the military operation and the food crisis promoted by the United States, pointing out that attempts to fabricate a food crisis with regard to Ukrainian grain are a dishonest and unfair political game.
Lavrov said: “The food crisis did not start today or yesterday, but years ago, when Western governments began to practice irrational policies in the field of food security, indicating that there is no need to form Western international alliances under the auspices of the United Nations regarding the food crisis and that the solution to the issue is simple represented in preparing safe corridors in Black Sea.
For his part, Abdullahian reiterated his country’s position in support of Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, expressing his hope to hold a meeting of the heads of the guarantor states of the Astana process – Russia, Iran and Turkey in Tehran soon.
Abdullahian pointed out that he discussed with Lavrov the developments of the nuclear file, expressing his thanks for Russia and China’s support for his country’s stance and his hope for the resumption of the Vienna talks in the coming period.
With regard to the Ukrainian crisis, Abdullahian explained that the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization “NATO” in the eastern regions near the borders of Russia is the cause of the problems.
