Lavrov:Military action against Syria can only make matters worse

Applying the principle of outside military intervention to the Syrian situation is ‘devoid of sense and also very dangerous’, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, speaking to the 68th General Assembly of the United Nations, according to Voice of Russia.

“Unfortunately, many argue that although banned by the UN Charter, the use of force and threats to use force are potent methods to solve conflicts between states.”

“At the same time, past experience shows that outside military intervention is senseless, useless and only makes matters worse. Forceful intervention is fraught with eroding the world order and destroying the safeguards against the proliferation of dangerous weapon systems.”

Each instance of chemical warfare in Syria must be investigated by the UN on the basis of facts

Speculation is inadmissible. Only facts must be taken into consideration. “The use of chemical weapons cannot be tolerated. At the same time, no one side has the right to apportion blame or mete out punishment for this.”

Modern world is multipolar and must be governed by international law

“The world needs leadership. This leadership, however, can only be collective, based on coordination between world bodies and powers and built on the principles of international law, which cannot be violated.”

“It’s very worrying to hear pronouncements that the need of leadership justifies the use of military force to protect big power interests in the Middle East. Recent history shows that no one power, no matter how big, can cope alone with the challenges faced by the family of nations.”
