Lavrov: International terrorism steps up in Middle East

BAKU, (ST)_Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said stepping up of international terrorism in the Middle East poses a threat to the world.

“We exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East. International terrorism has stepped up actions in Syria and Iraq. Firstly, we are close to this troublesome region. Secondly, those who fill their ranks won’t calm down. This poses a threat to everyone,” Lavrov said at talks with Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mamedyarov on Wednesday.

The fight against this evil is “our common task. We agreed to step up contacts in this field”, Lavrov said.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian minister of foreign affairs, who is currently on a visit in the Azerbaijani capital, has expressed hope to discuss the unrest in Ukraine with the Azerbaijani leaders and synchronize stances on other international issues.

“We maintain regular contacts under the decisions, taken by the presidents of our countries,” Lavrov said at talks with Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mamedyarov on Wednesday.

“Bilateral contacts between our countries are intensive. Vice-Premier Dmitry Rogozin is expected to arrive [in Azerbaijan] any day,” Lavrov added.
