Lavrov, Guterres hold talks on the situation in Syria

GENEVA, (ST)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Monday held talks in Geneva on the situation in Syria and the US-Russia relations.

The talks, which were attended by the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen were held  behind closed doors.

A statement by the Russian Foreign Ministry said that “a detailed exchange of opinions on most pressing issues on the international agenda, including the situation in Syria, has taken place.”

  The ministry added that “issues relating to Russia’s contacts with the UN Secretariat have been discussed. Special attention was paid to the 75th anniversary of victory in World War II and the creation of the global organization.”

The two sides confirmed their commitment to strengthening the United Nations’ central role in global affairs.

Lavrov arrived in Geneva to take part in the high-level 43rd session of the UN Human Rights Council and to address the Disarmament Conference on February 25.
