Lavrov discusses with his counterpart, Maas the illegal coercive economic measures against Syria

Moscow, (ST)  – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with his German counterpart, Heiko Maas, during a phone call today, the issue of illegal unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on Syria and the issue of providing humanitarian assistance without preconditions.

Russia Today website quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement that the two ministers affirmed during the call that “the solution to the crisis in Syria can only be reached through a political process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves with support from the United Nations. This political process based on a commitment to the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Syria in accordance with the Security Council resolution International No. 2254”.

Russian Minister, Lavrov pointed to the negative consequences of the illegal economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union on Syria, which are still in place despite the call by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to reduce unilateral measures in light of the spread of the Corona virus pandemic.

According to the statement, the German-initiated call dealt with “issues of providing humanitarian assistance to all Syrians in all their lands without politicizing, discriminating and proposing preconditions.”

The statement added that “the two ministers exchanged views in the discussions witnessed by the UN Security Council regarding the prospects for the mechanism of transporting cross-border aid to Syria”.

Lavrov referred in this context to the need to make humanitarian aid to Syria compatible with the facts of the field situation and the standards of international humanitarian law that require coordination of all operations with the Syrian government.”
