MOSCOW, (ST)- Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stressed that only the Syrians have the right to decide the future of their own country, calling for the non-interference in the work of the Constitutional Committee on Syria.
In a press conference in Moscow on Monday with his Nepalese counterpart Pradeep Gyawali, Lavrov stressed the need to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria in accordance with the UN Resolution No. 2254 which affirms that the only the Syrians have the right to decide the future of their country.
The Russian minister reiterated rejection of any attempts to interfere in the work of the constitutional committee on Syria, pointing out that some countries have been trying over the past nine months to hamper UN efforts to launch the committee’s work. He stressed that threats aiming to foil the committee still exist and this contradicts the UN Resolution No. 2254, urging the United Nations to guarantee the implementation of this resolution.
The mini committee for discussing the Syrian constitution started the second round of its meetings on Monday in Geneva with the participation of the Syrian national delegation.
The UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said at the conclusion of the first round of the meetings of the mini committee for discussing the Syrian constitution on November 8th that the committee discussed important issues most important of which is preserving Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity in addition to the continuous fight against terrorism.
