Lavrov and Abdullahian stress the necessity of finding a political solution to the crisis in Syria and lifting the Western economic measures imposed on it
Moscow, (ST) – Russian Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Iranian Hossein Amir Abdollahian stressed the need to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria. They stressed the need to lift the coercive Western economic measures imposed on it, which violate UN Security Council resolutions.
Lavrov said during a press conference with Abdullahian in Moscow on Wednesday that we discussed the situation in Syria and evaluated the summit of the guarantor states of the Astana process “Russia, Iran and Turkey”, which was held in Tehran on the 19th of last July.
Lavrov added that we agreed on this summit the importance of the Astana formula to achieve a political settlement in Syria and solve all humanitarian issues and outstanding problems due to Western sanctions that undermine Security Council resolutions.
Regarding relations between Russia and Iran, Lavrov indicated that these relations have reached a new qualitative level, which will be determined in a major agreement between the two countries.
Lavrov stressed Russia’s support for reviving the nuclear agreement and the need for the United States to return to it and cancel all sanctions imposed on Iran.
Lavrov indicated that Russia and Iran consistently support international law and do not accept the Western approach that seeks to replace international law by trying to dictate a system based on rules that have nothing to do with democracy, the United Nations Charter, or the principle of equal sovereignty of states.
For his part, Abdullahian said that we are on the right track in relations with Russia to serve the peoples of the two countries, and we seek to activate trade cooperation. “There are agreements reached between the presidents of the two countries that we will implement in full”, he added
Regarding the Vienna negotiations aimed at reviving the nuclear agreement, Abdullahian said
Abdullahian also stressed the need for the International Atomic Energy Agency to refrain from politicization and to carry out its technical tasks and duties.
