Lavrentiev: “We reject attempts by external forces and terrorist organizations to undermine stability in Syria”
Head of the Russian delegation to the 22nd Astana-format international meeting on Syria, the Russian President’s Special Envoy to Syria Alexander Lavrentiev, stressed his rejection of attempts by external forces and terrorist organizations to destabilize Syria.
During a press conference today, Lavrentiev explained at the end of the meeting that some terrorist organizations, most notably “Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham”, which has been included on the UN Security Council’s lists of terrorist entities, and some external forces are trying to exploit the tense situation in the region to escalate the situation in Idlib and other areas to destabilize the country, which is a serious situation that is rejected.
Lavrentiev pointed out that the meeting discussed the situation of refugees, as the Israeli bombing of Lebanon caused the return of about 400,000 Syrians to their country from Lebanon and the displacement of a large numbers of Lebanese who came to Syria, explaining that the Syrian economy is suffering mainly due to the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and Western countries, and that discussions were held with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Syria Geir Pedersen on the need to mobilize the efforts of the international community to provide more assistance to meet the needs of refugees.
