Kyrgyzstan Backs Russian Airstrikes on ISIL Positions in Syria

BISHKEK-President Almazbek Atambayev of Kyrgyzstan has announced his support for the Russian airstrikes targeting the positions of the terrorist organization calling itself the “Islamic State in Iraq and Levant” (ISIL) in Syria.

“Countries of the Collective Security Treaty Organization [CSTO] first of all should think about protecting their borders, but since the [ISIL] has announced its objective to seize big territories, Kyrgyzstan supports the Russian air strikes in Syria on positions of the terrorists there,” President Atambayev told Itar Tass news agency on Sunday.

“Fighting IS serves the interests of Kyrgyzstan, and in this aspect we support Russia’s air strikes on positions of the terrorists in Syria,” he said, adding the air strikes are effective.

Last Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the start of Russia’s airstrikes against ISIL positions in Syria according to an agreement between the Syrian Arab Republic and Russia aiming to fight terrorism and eliminate ISIL terrorist organization.
