Krahenbuhl Hails Services Provided by the Syrian State to Palestinian Refugees

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) Pierre Krahenbuhl has hailed  Syria’s efforts as to provide all services to Palestinian refugees in the country, stressing the agency’s keenness to continue providing aid to Palestinians in Syria.

In a press conference on Tuesday, Krahenbuhl said his visit to Syria aimed at checking and assessing the situation of the Palestinian refugees and at touring a number of refugee camps which were affected by destruction over the past period, particularly the al-Yarmouk camp and the area surrounding Yelda.

“It is early to speak about the camp and the return of the refugees to it,” he clarified.

He added that during his visit to Sbeineh refugee camp, he noticed positive indications as UNRWA has rehabilitated its social and medical facilities there, the matter that helped some 10,000 Palestinian refugees return to the camp.

Krahenbuhl pointed out that lack of funding is the biggest challenge facing UNRWA, estimating the deficit at $250 million.
