Johanna Konta’s hopes of making the main draw at the French Open have been dashed after she was knocked out in the second round of qualifying.
The 22-year-old – the only one of four British players who managed to clear the opening hurdle in the qualifying process in Paris – was beaten 4-6 6-3 7-5 by Galina Voskoboeva.
In cold and wet conditions at Roland Garros, the British number three won the first set before her rival from Kazakhstan, the 10th seed in qualifying, hit back.
Konta responded once when Voskoboeva served for the match in the decider, but she was unable to do anything when she presented her opponent with a second opportunity to progress.
Laura Robson, Heather Watson and Elena Baltacha will now be Britain’s only representatives in the singles main draws for the second slam of the season.
