Tokyo (ST): Japan’s parliament today re-elected Liberal Democratic Party Chairman Fumio Kishida as prime minister after his party gained a majority in the recent lower house elections.
According to Japan’s Kyodo Agency, Kishida will start forming his new government this afternoon, while Chief Cabinet Secretary HirokazuMatsuno said that “the basic position of the new government is to listen carefully to people’s voices and urgently implement the necessary policies to address their concerns.”
The LDP won 261 seats in the House of Representatives in the last election, 15 seats less than it had previously but which ensured effective control of all the permanent committees in the Japanese House of Representatives.
