GENEVA- United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for ending the violence in Syria and said that an international conference on Syria was the best chance for reaching a political solution to end the crisis in the country.
Ban made the remarks in a press conference after attending the opening ceremony of the High-level Segment of United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Substantive Session 2013 in Geneva.
Highlighting a U.S.-Russian initiative to bring Syrian parties to the negotiating table as the best chance for a lasting solution that would deliver peace and save lives in Syria, Ban said “it is essential that we do everything possible to ensure that this conference takes place as soon as possible.”
“I urge the international community to fully commit to a political process. I once again call on all those with influence to act and act now,” he said.
