AMMAN, (ST) _ US Secretary of State John Kerry noted his country’s support which he described as ” enormous” to ” Doha coalition”, disclosing that a huge amount of weapons reached armed militias in Syria.
Speaking at a press conference with his Jordanian counterpart, Nasser Judeh, Kerry said the US believes that a diplomatic solution is the key to ending the conflict, while vowing to continue providing support to the Syrian opposition. He did not mention what type of aid, however, amid signs that Washington may prefer to avoid providing the ” Free Syrian Army” FSA with weapons.

”Through hard and deliberate, patient work, we have been able to narrow those gaps very significantly,” he said after intense meetings with King Abdullah and Arab League ministers. Kerry said that though the Arab peace initiative launched over a decade ago had not received the necessary backing from Israel, he hoped this time around the Palestinians and Israelis would achieve positive results after years of deadlock.
”I continue to remain hopeful that the sides will soon be able to come to sit at the same table,” he said. ”There are still some elements, some language that needs to be agreed upon and worked out,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Arab league issued a statement in which it said the ideas brought forward by Kerry were positive and could be built upon.
Kerry had earlier met with ministers from the Arab League to introduce a proposal for reviving the talks, and will be holding further meetings in the coming two days.
Diplomatic sources said the official announcement of resumption of talks might be made late on Wednesday, as the White House hopes to wrap up a diplomatic flurry of activity by bringing the Palestinians and Israel to the negotiation table.
Key issues to be discussed include the future of Jerusalem, the borders of the Palestinian state and the fate of millions of Palestinian refugees.
For his part, the Jordanian Minister stressed his country ‘s stand which provides for a political solution to the crisis in Syria to maintaining Syria’s sovereignty and the dignity of the Syrian people.
