Kazakh Capital to Host New Meeting On Syrian Settlement on February 15-16, Invitations Sent

ASTANA, (ST)-The Kazakh Foreign Ministry on Saturday announced that it invited the delegation of the Syrian Arab Republic, the Opposition Representatives and the UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan De Mistura to the Astana Meeting on the Syrian settlement due on February 15 and 16.

  In a statement on its website, the ministry said that during the meeting the parties will discuss the implementation of the cessation of hostilities in Syria, measures to stabilize situation in particular areas, adoption of rules for a joint operational group, and agreeing further measures to consolidate the cessation of hostilities , as well as other practical steps in light of the upcoming intra-Syrian talks in Geneva.   

According to the statement, invitation was also sent to US representatives who act as observers in the meeting.

A meeting on the Syrian settlement was held on January 23 and 24 in Astana. The communiqué of the meeting affirmed commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Syria. It reiterated that the only solution to the crisis can be attained through a political process.

The communiqué announced establishing a trilateral mechanism to observe the implementation of the cessation of hostilities and also stressed insistence on fighting terrorism.
