Jordanian initiative to support the Syrian pound

Amman, (ST) –  A group of Jordanian youths recently launched an initiative  to support the Syrian pound in the light of the recent ordeal that befell Syria as a result of the earthquake, and to provide urgent humanitarian aid to the country.

The initiative aims to raising the Syrian pound’s exchange rate against foreign currencies by converting any Jordanian amount of money into the Syrian pound. This will contribute to supporting the Syrians in the light of the difficult circumstances that their country is going through as a result of the devastating earthquake that caused human and material losses to the Syrians.

Mustafa Al-Maaytah, a doctor from Al-Karak Governorate, who created the idea of the initiative, told SANA that the initiative is based on converting any available Jordanian amount of money into the Syrian pound, even if the amount is one dinar and officially does not violate the law and without making any profit.

Al-Maaytah explained that the initiative was welcomed by Jordanians in the various governorates of the Kingdom, who rushed to convert their dinars into the Syrian pound, each according to his financial ability.

Doctor Khaled Naim Al-Baqain, a resident in the Jordanian capital, Amman, did not hesitate to participate in the initiative alongside a number of his friends. The group went to the exchange offices and transferred Jordanian sums of money into the Syrian currency. He indicated that some of them wished to keep the Syrian paper currency.

For his part, a member of the Jordanian Money Exchange Association, Alaa Diranieh pointed out that the demand for the Syrian pound increased by 50% as a result due to notable turnout by the Jordanian people.
