Safadi held extensive talks with Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Asaad Al-Shaibani, which followed up on the outcomes of the summit meeting between His Majesty King Abdullah II and President Al-Shara’a in Amman on February 26, 2025
During the meeting, which came within the framework of the ongoing communication and coordination process, the two ministers stressed the need to activate cooperation in all fields and adopt practical mechanisms to advance cooperation to the best levels.
A joint statement was issued following the meeting in which the two ministers affirmed the strength of the deep-rooted historical relations between Jordan and Syria and the importance of turning the directives of the two countries’ leaderships into institutional work that benefits them and the entire region.
The two ministers agreed to form a higher coordination council whose membership includes various sectors, including energy, health, industry, trade, transportation, agriculture, water, information and communication technology, education, and tourism. The council will hold its first meeting in the coming weeks.
Safadi affirmed the Kingdom’s absolute support for Syria in the reconstruction process through a Syrian-Syrian process in which all segments of the Syrian people participate, based on principles that guarantee Syria’s unity, security, stability, and sovereignty, rid the country of terrorism and preserve the rights of all Syrians after years of oppression, injustice, and destruction.
Minister Al-Shaibani emphasized the interconnectedness of stability between the two countries, Syria’s concern for the Kingdom’s security, its rejection of any threat to its security and safety, and the strengthening of cooperation in security fields, including combating the terrorist organization ISIS and terrorism in all its forms, and combating drug and arms smuggling.
Safadi praised the efforts made by the Syrian government to combat drug smuggling.
The two ministers also discussed the necessary steps to activate the outcomes of the Syria and Neighboring Countries Conference on Combatting ISIS, which the Kingdom hosted on March 9, 2025.
The two ministers expressed their satisfaction with the steady growth in trade exchange between the two countries
Safadi stressed the necessity of halting the ongoing Israeli attacks on Syria and the occupation of part of its territory, considering this a flagrant violation of international law, a clear violation of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement between Syria and Israel, and an escalation that pushes towards more tension and conflict in the region.
The two ministers agreed to continue coordination and activate communication between the relevant ministries and institutions of the two countries in the coming period to take the necessary steps to increase cooperation.
