Japan’s ruling coalition wins majority in upper house elections

Tokyo (ST): Japan’s ruling coalition won a landslide victory in the Senate elections, after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during an election rally in Nara, west of the country.

AFP reported that the ruling coalition of Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party and his ally Komeito won more than 75 out of 125.

Kinta Izumi, leader of the opposition Constitutional Democratic Party, conceded defeat.

It is noteworthy that these elections, which took place yesterday, are organized every three years and include half of the 24 Senate seats.
