Jahangiri: International Community Should Support Syria, Iraq in Fight against Terrorist Organizations

BAGHDAD- Iranian First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri has stressed that the international community should support the people of Syria and Iraq in their fight against the terrorist and extremist groups, because these two countries form the frontline in the confrontation of the terrorism targeting the entire region.

According to a statement by the Iraqi Presidency, Jahangiri reiterated during his meeting yesterday with Iraqi President Fuad Masum in Baghdad that Iran considers the danger represented by the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) terrorist organization as a threat to the region and the entire world.

He described ISIL as “evil phenomenon” that its brutalities have affected the Islamic countries and aimed at distorting the image of Islam.”

He also stated that ISIL cannot be countered just militarily but also ideologically and by eliminating all sources of support provided to the terrorists.

Iran considers the Iraqi security as its own and stands beside the Iraqi people and government in any situation, Jahangiri said.

He added Iran and Iraq should make efforts to expand relations in various spheres, pointing out that Iran is ready to play an “active” role in reconstructing Iraq.

The Iranian official highlighted the importance of maintaining unity and solidarity in Iraq.

The Iraqi president thanked Iran for its humanitarian and technical help to Iraq and expressed hope that Iran-Iraq relations would be expanded.

Masum pointed out that the terrorism facing Iraq pose a terrorist threat to all, “so understanding and cooperation with all countries including friendly Iran is essential to face the challenges facing Iraq and other countries of the region.
