Jaafari: UNSC Member States Provide Terrorists in Syria with Chemical Weapons, Others Turn Blind eye

NEWYORK,(ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar Jaafari, reiterated Syria’s commitment to UN resolutions to counter the threat posed by the arrival of weapons of mass destruction to terrorists, stressing that Syria is calling on the UN Security Council to prevent the access of weapons to terrorists and hold countries supporting them accountable.

In Syria’s statement yesterday, during a UNSC meeting on Resolution 1540 on preventing terrorists from acquiring and manufacturing weapons of mass destruction, Jaafari indicated the involvement of UNSC member states in providing terrorist groups with chemical weapons or its ingredients  and the engagement of other UNSC member states in turning a blind eye on these serious violations, which constitute a grave threat targeting the entire world, pointing out that the UN SC did not react toward the Syrian calls to honor UNSC resolution 1540, because this was prevented by UNSC effective members.

“Syria provided the UNSC with several audio recordings and videos confirming terrorist groups possession of chemical substances and their intention to use it in Syrian areas, but some UNSC member states ignored our calls  on honoring UN resolution 2118, which called on Member States to refrain from providing any form of support for terrorist groups that attempt to develop nuclear weapons, chemical or biological weapons, delivering them, as well as to inform the SC of any violations of UN resolution 1540.” Jaafari explained.

“Despite all attempts revealed on terrorist groups smuggling of chemical weapons, including sarin gas through the Turkish territory to Syria, and the authentic  reports to that certain countries stand behind the attacks, against Damascus on 08/21/2013, the UN SC did not make a move, because certain UNSC member states have worked to prevent the UN from carrying out assigned responsibilities against the terrorist threat posed on Syria, state, government and people, as a threat to security and stability in the region and the world, alike. ” Jaafari underlined.

He stressed that ” the Syrian Government reaffirms its commitment to UN resolutions and enforced procedures in cooperating and exchanging information and coordination to confront the threat posed by the arrival of weapons of mass destruction to terrorists’ hands”, adding that the Syrian government provided the UNSC Resolution  1540 Committee with five national reports on the implementation of this resolution. “

Jaafari concluded by saying that ” The Syrian Government once again demands the UNSC to carry out the tasks entrusted to it, so as to ensure that no terrorist groups operating on the Syrian territory can get weapons of mass destruction and the accountability of state sponsors of terrorism in Syria, in the context of efforts to maintain international peace and security “.
