Jaafari: Turkey Failure to Obtain non-Permanent UNSC Seat Scandalous

NEW YORK, (ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari stressed  that Turkey’s failure  to obtain the support of UN member states to have a non-permanent seat at  the Security Council for two years, “amounts to a scandal and ethical indication on  the failure of the policy of the Turkish government towards Syria and Iraq.”

In a telephone interview with Syrian TV yesterday, Jaafari added  that ” Turkey having  60 votes against  132 votes for  Spain at UN General Assembly is a very big setback and a loss that  lives up to the level of scandal because of the low confidence entrusted in the  Government of the AKP, led by Recep Tayyip Erdogan , bankruptcy of his policies and lack of support , endeavored by  the so-called international community to it  ,especially towards Syria and Iraq. “

“Several  delegates  participating in the vote expressed their dissatisfaction with the policy of the AKP, especially toward Syria because it is legal does not honor  the UN Charter ,the provisions of international law and good neighborly relations between countries,”  he underscored.

However, Turkey failed to get a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council and was  replaced by Spain , following a second round of voting to elect  the fifth non-permanent member to the UNSC.

AFP reported that in the second voting,  Turkey got 60 votes only against 132 for Spain ,190 votes out of 193  for Angola,  187 for  Malaysia ,181 for  Venezuela ,and  145 for  New Zealand. To be illegible for the seat, a minimum two thirds of votes is required.

Noteworthy,  that  the UNSC  includes 15 member states,  five of which  are permanent members and have the right to veto and the other ten non permanent  member states and   do not enjoy this right.
