NEWYORK,(ST)_ Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations , Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari stressed that the fight against terrorism that targets Syrian citizens is crucial for the success of any peaceful political solution to the crisis in Syria , calling on UN Security Council SC members to maintain solidarity with the Syrian government in the face of terrorism, which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Syrians , and make the Middle East a zone free from all forms of terrorism .
In a speech yesterday during the UN Security Council briefings by heads of sub-committees concerned on the application of Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism al-Jaafari called for joint action to make the Middle East a zone free from all forms of terrorism as a step towards eliminating the scourge of global terrorism .
He stressed that the Syrian delegation at the UN consistently since the beginning of the crisis in Syria emphasized the growing threat posed by terrorism which targets Syria , noting that in addition to the detailed explanation of the aspects and patterns of terrorism faced by Syria ” we extended so far on behalf of the Syrian government 259 formal letter to the UN Secretary -General and successive heads of the Security Council all relate to the issue of combating terrorism, 76 of which deal with terrorist activities associated with al Qaeda, as well as 9 messages forwarded to the President of the Commission of UN resolution 1373 and 4 messages to the President of the Commission of decision 1540 , however, we are still waiting for a response . “
He said that these messages drew the attention of the UN Security Council and its relevant committees to the activities of the terrorist atrocities committed by the armed terrorist groups on the Syrian territory against state institutions , infrastructure and public services and facilities , including hospitals, educational institutions , houses of worship , monuments , museums and shrines as well as the national cadres , clergy and members of peacekeeping forces UNDOF ,noting that the terrorist attacks have recently taken a new course in targeting civilian areas by random mortar shelling against residents and places of worship, Muslim and Christian children in their schools and the school transport bus in an attempt to deprive them of learning .
” 40 mercenary Saudis were killed yesterday by the Syrian armed forces , including the son of head of officers affairs in the Saudi Royal Guard , and mortar shells were fired at a school in Damascus claimed the lives of dozens of children , while mortars also hit the Social Welfare Institute of paralysis palsy in Barzeh in Damascus, led to the death of many disabled children “, Jaafari said pointing out that mercenary terrorists, who crossed the borders to Syria from Lebanon killed yesterday in Deir Attiya city eight doctors , ten nurses many patients .
al-Jaafari added that , ” in spite of the inclusion of the so called ” al-Nusra front for the people of Syria ” and its leader ” Abu Mohammed Joulani ” on the list of the 1267 entities and individuals linked to al Qaeda , covered by the sanctions imposed on the organization and in spite of the condemnation of the Security Council in its presidential statement dated 2-10 – 2013 of the increasing terrorist attacks carried out by Qaeda-linked organizations and individuals in Syria and the call on all parties to commit themselves to putting an end to terrorist acts committed by these parties , these steps, unfortunately, do not live up to the size of the challenge posed by international terrorism which targets Syria and all Syrians .
al-Jaafari noted the article published by the Independent newspaper on Tuesday that the extremist British called Anjame Shidra organized network to send mercenaries of British nationals to Syria so far sent 300 mercenaries and that there are mercenaries coming from France and other countries.
He demanded the UN Security Council to obliging all UNSC member states to refrain from incitement to terrorism and hatred, in accordance with resolutions 1624 in 2005 , whether in the media or in official statements or by supplying weapons , money , and political and media support to terrorists , and to combat the exploitation of the Internet and new technologies for terrorism incitement among young people around the world .
Al-Jaafari called to thwart the efforts being made by terrorist groups to obtain weapons of mass destruction and use them as it did in Khan al-Asal on March 19, 2013 and in Damascus Ghouta on August 21, 2013 , adding that Syria has provided the committee of resolution 1540 with documents proving pursuit of terrorist organizations in Syria to obtain chemical weapons across neighboring countries , and also drew attention to the reports on shipments seized in Turkey and in Lebanon, with the names of individuals who were caught red-handed .
He called for accountability of Governments of the States that , arm , fund , train and facilitate the crossing of armed terrorist groups into Syria and provide a safe haven for them, and considering them as a partner in terrorism which claimed the lives of the Syrians and force these countries to desist from these destructive practices which do not only violateUN Security Council resolutions on counter-terrorism , but are inconsistent with Council resolutions 2042 and 2043 for 2012 and 2118 of 2013, and with Geneva statement, which all stress the need to reach a settlement to the crisis in Syria through a Syrian -led political process and a comprehensive national dialogue among the Syrians.
