Jaafari: Convoys transporting chemicals to Latakia Port, Should be Protected, against Terrorist Attacks

NEWYORK,(ST)_ Syrian Permanent Representative to the UN Dr. Bashar Jaafari, stressed that Sigrid Kag, Special Coordinator of the joint mission of the UN and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said in a briefing to the UN Security Council on the disposal of chemical weapons in Syria, that everything is going well and that it is not possible to fully comply with the timeframes, unless the security situation in Syria is stable.

Kag informed UNSC that while talking, mortars were falling on Damascus, port of Latakia

Jaafari said in a press conference after the briefing made by Kag that ” Kag informed the Security Council that while talking with the UNSC, mortars were shelled on Damascus and Latakia port. “They carried many attacks on Latakia and continue to target the harbor “, she remarked, in reference to the actions carried out by armed terrorist groups against the two cities.

Jaafari added that one of an impact on the armed terrorist groups in Syria should ensure that those groups not to target convoys transporting chemicals to Latakia ‘s port.

Jaafari indicated that the report of the Director-General of the UN organization on Prohibition of chemical weapons said that large amount of chemicals were moved outside Syria and 11 shipment were transported to the port of Latakia, that about half of the material to be destroyed outside Syria was removed from the Syrian territory, the transfer process is going well and that the Syrian government expressed commitment to the time-frame.

No pressure was made on Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia by allies at the UNSC over covering the terrorist attack on Kasab

Jaafari regretted reluctance of some UNSC members of the press made by Russia warning of serious attacks by armed terrorist groups against Latakia ’s port.

Jaafari indicated that no pressure was made by any one of the allies of Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia at the UNSC on those countries covering terrorist attack on Kasab, resulted in the displacement of thousands of Syrian Armenians and killing many of them by armed terrorist groups under Turkish military cover.

French policy is part of the crisis in Syria, rather of the solution

In response to a question about remarks by representative of France, about the reason for not shipping chemicals, Jaafari explained that France is not neutral in its view of the situation in Syria and that the French understanding of the region ‘s politics is based on logic of sectarianism and partition of the area, adding that the French policy is part of the crisis in Syria and not part of the solution, and when France supports terrorist groups, and not national opposition that are destroying Syria, thus France is engaged in terrorism in Syria and should be held responsible before UNSC  counter- terrorism committees concerned.
