Italy, Sweden report their first confirmed monkeypox cases

Italy and Sweden have become this Thursday the last countries to report cases of monkeypox, after those registered in the UK, Spain and Portugal, according to media outlets.  

 

The illness, which can be transmitted from person to person through air droplets, close body contact, or sharing contaminated bedding or objects, occurs in central and western Africa. 

 

According to Swedish Public Health Agency, there is an infected person in Stockholm. “The person infected with the virus in Sweden is not seriously ill, but is receiving treatment,” said the infectious disease expert. Klara Soden it’s a statement-. 

 

We still don’t know where the person got infected. The investigation into this is ongoing.”

 

A first infection of monkeypox has also been detected in Italy. 

 

The head of health for the Lazio region, Alessio D’Amatohas announced on Facebook that the case had been confirmed at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases of Italy. 

 

The ANSA news agency reported that the infected man had returned from a trip to the Canary Islands  and was isolated in a hospital in Rome.
