Iravani: Washington’s Attempt to Hold an Informal Meeting on Iran is a Dangerous Precedent

New York (ST) – Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Ambassador  to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani, stressed that the United States’ attempt to organize an informal meeting of the international organization on the situation in Iran is a dangerous precedent, and a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

In a letter he addressed to the ambassadors and permanent representatives of member states and observers at the United Nations, Iravani said “The US, as the sponsor of this meeting, through its mischievous disinformation campaign, has claimed that the event is aimed at protecting the rights of Iranian women. This is nothing but sheer hypocrisy and a flagrant violation of human rights values.” He stressed that America does not have the legal, moral, and political authority to hold such a meeting.

Iravani stressed that Iran is fully committed to the promotion and protection of human rights  as stipulated in  international law.

He pointed out “The right to free expression and peaceful assembly has been recognized and ensured by the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Every government is responsible to protect its people against such violent acts and securing the law and order, and Iran is no exception.”
