Iraq’s Interior Minister announces forming joint cell with Syria, Jordan and Lebanon as part of anti-drug initiative
Interior Minister of Iraq Abdul Amir Al-Shammari on Saturday announced forming a joint cell with Jordan, Lebanon and Syria to combat drugs.
The Iraqi News Agency quoted Al-Shammari as saying during the 6th Baghdad International Dialogue Conference for Regional Connectivity that “a meeting was held in Jordan with the participation of Iraq, Syria and Lebanon to discuss countering drug smuggling. We came up with some recommendations, the most important of which was the formation of a joint liaison cell to reduce time and follow up international drug trafficking gangs.”
“There is considerable cooperation as good results have been achieved resulting in the arrest of traders from neighboring countries with the seizure of large quantities of narcotic substances, and control has been activated, ” he added.
He pointed out that the Iraqi government has directed to make Iraq the focal point for the security initiative against drug trafficking.
On February 17, the interior ministers of Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Lebanon hold a meeting in the Jordanian capital, Amman, to discuss joint efforts to combat drug smuggling.
