Iraqis Must Unite in Fight against Terrorism, Says Larijani

TEHRAN- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says all Iraqi groups and ethnicities must reinforce their unity in order to eradicate terrorism and establish full security in the country.

In a meeting with visiting Chairman of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) Ammar Hakim in Tehran on Tuesday, the Iranian Parliament speaker hailed the recent victories of the Iraqi government, army and people against terrorists.

The Iraqi army, along with popular forces, has been engaged in operations to liberate militant-held regions.

Iraqi government forces on Saturday managed to fully retake a strategic airbase in the town of Qayyarah, located some 60 kilometers (40 miles) south of Mosul, from DaeshTakfiri terrorists.

Promising future awaits Iraq – Hakim

The ISCI chairman, for his part, hailed Iran’s support for the Iraqi government and nation in their campaign against terrorists.

He said a promising future awaits Iraq after the final defeat of terrorists and added that all communities and the Kurds in Iraq have come to an understanding that they have no option but to strengthen their cooperation in order to establish security and help the progress of the country.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by gruesome violence ever since Daesh terrorists mounted an offensive in the country in June 2014. The militants have been committing vicious crimes against all communities in Iraq.

Hakim also noted that efforts are underway in Iraq to improve the economic situation of the war-stricken country.

On Monday, the ISCI chairman held separate meetings with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on international affairs.
