Iraqi Embassy in Syria: Kurdistan’s Referendum Unconstitutional

DAMASCUS, (ST)- The Iraqi Embassy in Damascus has stressed that the referendum held recently in Kurdistan province in northern Iraq was unconstitutional and of no legal basis as it was organized unilaterally without the approval of the Iraqi government.

In a statement on Sunday, the embassy said “the referendum undermines anti-terrorism international efforts, particularly the battle against Daesh terrorist organization. It also poses a threat to the security of the region’s countries,” the embassy added, pointing out that the referendum was rejected by the Iraqi government and it faced wide regional and international opposition.

 The embassy’s statement clarified that the mission of the Iraqi federal government lies basically in preserving the unity and territorial integrity of Iraq and the protection of the Iraqi Republic against any foreign threat or aggression.

Officials in the Iraqi Kurdish region insisted on holding a referendum on September 25, 2017 to separate from Iraq despite the rejection of the Iraqi government, MPs and neighboring countries to this move.
