The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday filed a complaint to the Security Council to hold an emergency session to discuss the recent Turkish aggression on the Iraqi province of Dohuk, north of the country, the ministry’s Spokesman Ahmed Al-Sahaf said in a statement reported by the Iraqi news Agency (INA).
On Wednesday, the Turkish regime forces committed a massacre by shelling a resort in Zakho district in Dohuk governorate, killing 9 Iraqis and injuring 23 others.
Iraq strongly condemned the aggression and summoned the Turkish Ambassador to Iraq to hand him a strongly worded protest letter that included the Iraqi government’s condemnation of this heinous crime by the Turkish forces.
Many angry Iraqis gathered in front of the Turkish consulate in Baghdad in protest against the deadly bombing.
On Friday, the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an urgent investigation into the artillery shelling of Dohuk.
A statement by the spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Farhan Haq stated that “the Secretary-General condemns the bloody artillery shelling that took place in the Zakho area in Dohuk Governorate”, calling for “a prompt and thorough investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure accountability”.
