BAGHDAD , (ST)_ Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki renewed during a meeting with the UN envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi in Baghdad yesterday his country ‘s support for a political solution to the crisis in Syria and expressed the hope that ” the Syrian people to avoid more tragedies and pains .”
According to the website of the Iraqi Prime Minister , Maliki expressed Iraq ‘s full readiness to support the UN envoy efforts to achieve a political , satisfactory for all Syrians and the region .
He pointed out that ” the military option reached a standstill and the growing conviction to the need for a political solution to the crisis.”
For his part, Brahimi called for concerted efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria and expressed hope to hold an international conference on Syria, Geneva 2 by the end of next month.
Zebari: Crisis repercussions reflected directly on neighboring countries
Hoshyar Zebari, the Iraqi foreign minister stressed that “everyone is convinced that a peaceful and political solution to the crisis in Syria is the option available in terms of the ultimate interest of the Syrian people.”
In a joint press conference with Brahimi, Zebari said that “the repercussions of the crisis in Syria extended and reflected to neighboring countries ” pointing out that these repercussions pushed to intensified international efforts by the UN , the United States and Russia to hold an international conference on Syria in Geneva .
Zebari considered that “it is natural that these consultations will pour in this direction , especially that everyone is now convinced that a political solution to the crisis in Syria is the currently available option .”
Zebari reiterated Iraq ‘s support for ” the international efforts for convening Geneva 2 Conference , in order to find a solution satisfactory to the Syrian people , meet their ambitions and put an end to the tragedy in Syria.”
Brahimi , in turn, expressed full agreement with the Iraqi position to the seriousness of the crisis in Syria on, in threatens peace and stability in the world.”
Brahimi ‘s visit to Iraq came in the framework of a regional tour ,started Saturday in Cairo aimed to prepare for an international conference on Syria to be held in Geneva.
