Iraq: OIC to hold an emergency meeting regarding insulting the Holy Quran

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Saturday that the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an emergency meeting regarding insulting the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark.

The ministry said in a statement that “in response to the request submitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and for two consecutive times, following what happened in the Kingdom of Sweden and later in Denmark, regarding insulting the Holy Quran and contempt of sanctities and provoking feelings of about two billion Muslims around the world, an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers in the Islamic Cooperation Organization in the Islamic Cooperation Organization will be held with the aim of discussing the most important collective procedures and positions of the member states in this regard.

The ministry pointed out that “provocative and heinous practices against Islamic sanctities are fueled by laws that permit this, under the pretext of freedom of expression and the right to demonstrate, and this revives hatred and extremism, threatens social peace and security, and brings human societies back to the memory of violence”.

Earlier, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemned in the strongest terms the incident of insulting the Holy Quran and burning the Iraqi flag in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Denmark, calling for an urgent summit of Islamic states to discuss proper response such repeated attacks on the Holy Quran in Denmark and Sweden.

Members of an Islamophobic group called “Danske Patrioter” in Denmark have burned a copy of the holy Quran and the Iraqi flag in front of the Iraqi Embassy in Copenhagen, while the Islamic nations are still in a rage about a recent similar incident in Sweden.

The provocative incident also caused renewed outrage and condemnation across the Islamic World.

Hundreds of protesters took to the streets in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Saturday following reports of the desecration of the Quran.
