Iran Urges Respect for Syria Presidential Vote Result

Iran has stressed the importance of respecting the voting results in Syria’s recent presidential election, saying that the Syrian people should decide about their political fate.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports the holding of the presidential election in Syria and its results as a legitimate right and a domestic decision,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

It praised the high turnout in the polls as a “big achievement,” saying the Syrian government has made good preparations to hold the election despite difficulties caused by certain foreign sides.

“Undoubtedly, this election, which was held with a competitive approach and within the framework of democratic components, heralds a new stage of stability and national reconciliation in the country,” the statement added.

The ministry expressed hope the democratic trend would improve national reconciliation to serve the Syrian people’s interests, put an end to the crisis in Syria and restore peace and tranquility.

Iran hopes that countries which have so far fueled instability in Syria through their unconstructive measures will now respect the Syrian people’s decision and make efforts to reconstruct the crisis-hit country instead of supporting terrorist and extremist groups, the statement pointed out.
