Iran: The coercive measures imposed on Syria should be lifted

Iran has reaffirmed the need to lift the coercive economic measures imposed on Syria, stressing its support for preserving Syria’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity and for establishing peace and stability in the country.

Ali Asghar Khaji, the Senior Advisor of the Iranian Foreign Minister for Political Affairs, said during his meeting on Saturday with the UN Chief’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen that “Iran has always supported the United Nations efforts that aim at consolidating the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, encouraging the intra-Syrian dialogue and establishing the bases of peace and stability in the country.”

“Syria, as a government and people, has confronted ISIS and other terrorist organizations for more than 10 years and now it has achieved relative stability,” Khaji asserted

He noted the need to intensify the efforts currently being held to lift the unfair sanctions imposed on Syria, to provide assistance to the Syrian people, to facilitate the return of the Syrian refugees home and to support the country’s reconstruction plans.

On his part, Pedersen hailed Iran’s efforts to cooperate with the United Nations and make progress in the Astana process on Syria.
