Iran Renews Support for Political Solution to Crisis in Syria

TEHRAN– Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian lashed out at the western countries for supporting terrorism in the region, and renewed Iran’s support for a political solution to the Crisis in Syria, according to FNA.

The crisis in Syria does not have a military solution and governments cannot be toppled by means of terrorism and these are the people who should decide in this regard,” Amir Abdollahian said in a meeting with his Cypriot counterpart AlexandrosZinon in Tehran on Tuesday.

He pointed out that since the beginning of the crisis in Syria, Iran has stressed its stable and transparent policy that the Arab country’s crisis does not have a military solution, and said, “Supporters of terrorism are now looking to resolve their internal problems through military showoff and airstrikes and they do not really mean to fight terrorism.”

Amir Abdollahian reiterated that fighting terrorism is an important global issue, and said, “Repetition of the past mistakes will not be helpful to regional stability and security, but it will pave the grounds for misuses by the terrorists and will make them more powerful.”

The Cypriot deputy foreign minister, for his part, pointed to his country’s concern about the rise in extremism and terrorism in the region, and underlined the need for real fight against this dangerous phenomena.

In September, President Bashar Al- Assad expressed Syria’s appreciation for Iran’s stances in support of the Syrian people and sovereignty and independence of nations.

He called for promoting Tehran-Damascus economic cooperation proportionate to the age-old bilateral ties, and said the Syrian nation welcomes Iran’s readiness to help rebuild the country.
