Iran renews its condemnation of the unilateral sanctions imposed on Syria

Tehran (ST) – Iran renewed its condemnation of the coercive unilateral sanctions imposed on the Syrian people by the USA and its allies.

IRNA News Agency quoted the ambassador and deputy permanent representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the UN Zahra Ershadi as saying in a speech during a meeting of the UN Security Council on the protection of civilians in armed conflicts, food security and the protection of basic services: “maintaining the unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU on Syria and plundering the Syrian natural resources by illegal foreign forces, have had a negative impact on the humanitarian situation in Syria, exacerbated the challenges faced by the Syrian people and impeded the Syrian government’s ability to provide essential services to those in need.”

She stressed that the unilateral sanctions can cause food insecurity that have adverse effects on lives of civilians including women and children.

She said: “The Israeli entity continues its acts of aggression and terrorist attacks against Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity amid Israel’s impunity and the silence of the international community.”

On the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, Ershadi indicated that the Israeli rentity continues its oppressive, expansionist, and apartheid practices, systematically violating the human rights of Palestinians. She noted that the UN report underlines that last year witnessed the highest number of Palestinian civilian fatalities in the West Bank since 2005.

The situation in Gaza is deeply distressing as it has effectively become the world’s largest prison and the destruction of the vital infrastructure has exacerbated the humanitarian situation, leaving the people of Gaza in a state of extreme vulnerability”, she added.
