New York, (ST) – Iran renewed its condemnation of the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian territory and the territories of other countries in the region. It called on the UN Security Council to take swift and decisive action to hold this rogue entity accountable.
IRNA quoted Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Saeed Iravani as saying during a UN Security Council session on Syria yesterday: First, the Republic of Iran strongly condemns the continued aggression of the Israeli occupation entity against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic and against other countries in the region.
He added that the illegal practices of the Israeli entity, along with its recent aggression against Yemen, which deliberately targeted civilian and vital infrastructure, blatantly violate international humanitarian law and the principles contained in the Charter of the United Nations, and are considered a serious threat to regional peace and security.
Iravani continued: This entity is based on terrorism and aggression and is the main source of insecurity and stability in the region and in other parts of the world.
The Iranian delegate said: The representative of the United States in the Council tried, as usual, hypocritically to deny her country’s responsibility for the current situation in Syria and the region in general and to blame Iran. “The truth that they cannot deny is that the illegal presence of the American occupation forces in Syria violates its sovereignty and territorial integrity, international laws, the United Nations Charter, and the Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2254 of 2015”, he added.
Iravani also stressed that the inhumane coercive measures imposed by the United States and its Western allies on Syria, their politicization of the refugees’ return issue, and their obstruction of international support for the reconstruction of Syria have exacerbated the suffering of the Syrian people and hindered reconstruction efforts.
On behalf of Iran, Iravani called on Western countries that falsely claim concern for human rights and are imposing an economic blockade on Syria to immediately lift these inhumane acts, stressing in this context the necessity of providing neutral and non-politicized humanitarian aid.
Iravani expressed Iran’s determination to continue supporting the Syrian people and government in their efforts to overcome the threats of terrorism and foreign occupation. He clarified that the scourge of terrorism still poses a serious threat to Syria and the entire region and must be dealt with firmly, but with full respect for national sovereignty, Syrian territorial integrity and independence, and this should not be a pretext to violate these basic principles of international law.
