Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said it has been a calculation mistake to insists on the military approach in Yemen, according to IRNA.
He made the remarks on Saturday in a telephone conversation with the special envoy of UN secretary general on Yemen, Ismaeel Walad Sheikh Ahmed, during which they exchanged views on the latest developments in the war-torn Arab country.
The Iranian diplomat thanked the UN secretary general and his envoy’s efforts, saying the continued use of military force has harmed the inter-Yemeni negotiations under UN sponsorship.
‘Lack of the UN success to stop the human plight in Yemen has damaged its credit in defending the International Humanitarian Law,’ Amir-Abodollahian added.
‘The Islamic Republic of Iran expects that on the verge of Eid al-Adha, the UN uses all within its might to stop war and bloodshed in Yemen,’ he said, stressing acceleration of dispatching humanitarian assistance to the war victims in Yemen.
The UN envoy referred to the latest steps to encourage inter-Yemeni talks and said the crisis in Yemen can only be settled through political solution.
‘Every influential domestic and foreign side in Yemen has to contribute to the atmosphere of direct negotiations among Yemeni groups so that truce will be established within the shortest possible time,’ he added.
The requisite to establishment of peace and stability in Yemen, he said, is the prudent understanding by political groups and parties of the existing realities and paying attention to people’s interests and demands.
Iran condemns targeting residence of Omani ambassador in San’a
On the other hand, Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham on Saturday strongly denounced targeting the residence of Omani ambassador to San’a by the Saudi-led coalition.
She condemned the act as running counter to international regulations supporting the immunity of diplomatic missions in other countries.
Afkham called on the international organizations, the United Nations in particular, to carry out their duty and immediately bring an end to the war and aggression of Saudi-led coalition forces on forbidden targets, including the residential areas and diplomatic places.
Referring to the constructive role of Oman in the Yemeni crisis, which she said has been repeatedly hailed by the international community, Afkham said with their revengeful and unacceptable act, the coalition forces proved that they do not even tolerate humanitarian acts of a country like Oman that makes efforts in cooperation with the International Red Cross Comittee and the United Nations to alleviate the sufferings of Yemeni people.
