Iran Plays Constructive Role in Mideast

At top Iranian diplomat has once again expressed Tehran’s support for regional countries against terrorism, highlighting the Islamic Republic’s “constructive role” in the Middle East.

Unlike some countries, which back terrorism and use it as a tool at the expense of the region’s security, Tehran strongly supports the regional countries, like Iraq, Syria, Yemen and Lebanon that face terror threats, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said on Sunday.

“The security of Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Arab Gulf littoral states are closely intertwined,” he added.

Amir-Abdollahian made the comments in reaction to Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir’s recent comments in which he accused Iran of interfering in the affairs of other countries in the region.

Iran “is the only state that interferes in the affairs of the region, whether in Syria or Lebanon or Iraq or Yemen,” Jubeir alleged during his visit to Egypt on Sunday.

The Iranian diplomat, meanwhile, said Tehran welcomes good relations with Riyadh and expects Saudi Arabia to avert the spread of war, promotion of terrorism, and deterioration of security in the region “via adopting logical policies.”

Saudi Arabia launched military aggression against Yemen on March 26 – without a UN mandate – in a bid to undermine the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which currently controls the capital, Sana’a, and other major provinces, and to restore power to Yemen’s fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, who is a staunch ally of Riyadh.

According to the UN, the conflict in Yemen has claimed the lives of about 2,000 people and displaced more than 500,000. Other Yemeni sources put the number at more than 4,000.

Iran has called for an end to the Saudi bombing campaign and the holding of an intra-Yemeni dialog.
