Iran: illegal sanctions against Syria impede the delivery of aid to those affected and the improvement of conditions

New York (ST): Iran has renewed its call on the international community to work to lift the unilateral inhumane sanctions imposed on Syria, especially to face the current humanitarian crisis arising from the repercussions of the earthquake that hit the country last February.

The Ambassador and Assistant Representative of the Republic of Iran to the United Nations, Zahraa Ershadi, said in a speech during a meeting of the UN Security Council on Syria yesterday: These illegal coercive measures have made the Syrian people’s access to basic needs very difficult, and they impede the ability of the Syrian government to improve conditions.

Ershadi explained that the humanitarian conditions in Syria are deteriorating, especially after the recent devastating earthquake, adding that, despite the efforts of the international organization and humanitarian agencies to provide assistance and support to those affected, the latest United Nations report shows that the lack of financial resources continues, and this needs urgent attention, calling on the international community and donors to continue to support humanitarian efforts in Syria.

Ershadi expressed Iran’s appreciation for the Syrian government’s continuous efforts to assist and facilitate humanitarian access to all parts of the country, adding: Tehran insists on fully implementing Resolution 2672 by focusing on early and initial recovery projects that are vital to rebuilding Syria’s infrastructure.
