Iran condemns politicizing the file of chemical weapons in Syria

Iran’s Deputy Permanent Representative to United Nations Zahra Ershadi has strongly condemned the politicization of the file of chemical weapons in Syria by certain countries, stressing that Syria has implemented its obligations towards this file and exerted constructive efforts in this regard.

Syria has made genuine efforts to meet its obligations pursuant to the Chemical Weapons Convention and it has proven its willingness to cooperate with the OPCW Technical Secretariat, but some states have politicized the file of chemical weapons in Syria and prevented the OPCW from confirming Syria’s compliance with its obligations, which could have resulted in constructive dialogue and cooperation, Ershadi said during a Security Council meeting on Friday.

Ershadi reiterated her country’s call for the full and effective implementation of the CWC without discrimination, pointing out that politicizing the implementation of the Convention and exploiting the OPCW for politically motivated agendas endangers the Convention’s credibility and also the Organization’s authority.

She also emphasize that any investigation into the use of chemical weapons must be impartial, professional, credible, and objective in order to establish the facts and reach evidence-based conclusions.
