Iran: Any Solution to Crisis in Syria Should Guarantee Syrian People’s Right to Self Determination

TEHRAN- Any solution to the crisis in Syria should guarantee the Syrian people’s right to determine their own destiny based on a Syrian-Syrian dialogue,ˈ said the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afhkam on Monday.

According to IRNA, Afkham stressed that Iran has repeatedly announced from the very beginning of the ongoing crisis in Syria that the problem should be solved through diplomatic solutions.

Criticizing US State Secretary John Kerry’s proposal on Iranˈs sidelines participation in the Geneva II talks, Afkham said Tehran would only accept proposals which are in line with its dignity.

She made the remarks while commenting on recent statement by US Secretary of State John Kerry on Iranˈs informal participation in the long-awaited Geneva II Conference on Syria, slated for January 22 in the Swiss city.

Kerry said on Sunday that it would be difficult to see how Iran could be a ˈministerial partnerˈ in the Geneva II talks. However, he said that Tehran could play a helpful role in finding a solution to the conflict in Syria.
