Iran and Russia representatives to the United Nations call for lifting Western sanctions on Syria

Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky has affirmed that Western donors deal with Syria and other countries in need with extreme discrimination, and they are exclusively interested in sponsoring weapon supplies to the regime in Ukraine.

Polyansky, during a session of the Security Council on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, said: “We consider that the situation that has arisen due to the funding of the United Nations humanitarian plan for Syria for the current year at less than 30 percent is a serious indicator.”

“It is clear that Syria, along with a number of other countries in need, is exposed to extreme discrimination by Western donors who are only interested in sponsoring weapon supplies to Ukraine.”

Polyansky added: “It is important not to forget this reality when we hear hypocritical statements from a number of our Western colleagues about the extent of their interest in the Syrians who do not help them, and they try to strangle them with unilateral sanctions.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations Amir Said Irwani called for lifting Western sanctions on Syria and stopping the looting of its wealth.

Irwani said during a session of the Security Council on the political and humanitarian affairs in Syria: “The humanitarian situation in Syria is still very dangerous, and one of the most important challenges facing Syria today is its troubled economy, and this is primarily due to the unilateral sanctions and the illegal exploitation of the country’s resources.”

Irwani added: “Iran believes that the primary solution to the crisis in Syria lies in political means, because military measures only lead to the complexity of the situation.”

He pointed out that the role of the United Nations in Syria must be supportive, and all operations must be under Syria’s leadership.

Irwani explained that the continued presence of terrorist groups poses a serious threat to the security of Syria and neighboring countries, and it is necessary to emphasize that the war against terrorism should not be used as an excuse to violate Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Irwani stressed that the illegal presence of the foreign military forces inside Syria has only increased instability in this country and the region.

He announced that Iran fully welcomes and supports the recent positive developments in Syrian diplomatic relations at the regional and international levels.
