International Youth Day

International Youth Day falls on 12 August 2014. It will bring youth issues to the attention of the international community and celebrate the potential of youth as partners in today’s global society. The theme of International Youth Day 2014 is “Youth and Mental Health” under the slogan ‘Mental Health Matters’.

There are 1.2 billion youth aged 15-24 years in the world.  It is reported that 20% of the world’s youth experience a mental health condition.

Youth with mental health conditions can often experience stigma and discrimination, which in turn can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled’. Efforts are needed to overcome this stigma to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free of isolation and unnecessary shame, and that they openly seek the services and support they need.

Thematic discussions and information campaigns will take place on 12 August 2014 across the world, to encourage both Member States and the general public to understand the needs of young people, to implement policies to help them overcome the challenges they face, and to help young people into the decision-making process.

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Colombo will observe the Day at a Mental Health Institution (Sahanaya Institute of Mental Health at Bolgoda, Panadura) with the participation of 40 residents of the institute on 12 August 2014. UNIC team will comprise of 2 UNIC staff members, 2 Counsellors, musicians and some students from the School of Social Works for a programme with inspirational speeches, music therapy, sports activities and a talent show. A group of dances too will perform at the event.
