Indonesian Hand Woven Textiles Exhibition “Tenun” reflects real image of Indonesian culture

The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus, in cooperation with the Al-Assad National Library under the auspices of the Syrian Ministry of Culture, organized a series of activities within the framework of promoting Indonesian culture in Damascus, Syria.

A number of ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Damascus attended the opening of the exhibition

The activities include “the Friends of Indonesia Forum”, the conclusion of the Indonesian language course and the opening of the Indonesian Textile Exhibition, showing a film about the students of the course and distributing certificates to them.

The Indonesian ambassador to Damascus Wajid Fawzi said in his statement during opening of the exhibition of handmade textiles “Tenun”: “We hold the hand woven textiles Exhibition Tenun in Syria as the Syrian people enjoy high taste of art and handicrafts which is similar to that of the Indonesians”.

“In this exhibition, we will show you some hand woven textiles from different places in Indonesia to reflect how culture could affect the civilization,” Fawzi added.

He continued to say :“Every piece of “Wastra Indonesia” is unique and distinct. It reflects the real image of the journey of Indonesian culture and civilization . It is not only a cultural heritage of Indonesia, but it also plays an important role in supporting national economy, by providing jobs opportunities and markets”.

“Culture is the best media means to enhance cooperation and to strengthen the ties among people and country. The Indonesian Embassy launched few years ago the annual program of Bahasa Indonesia course to introduce Indonesian language to the Friendly Syrian people”, the ambassador pointed out.

Dr. Lubana Mshaweh, the Syrian Minister of Culture, for her part, said in a statement during the event: “We have relations of the friendship and cooperation that have not been severed in the darkest circumstances that we have gone through.”

“Through our cultural cooperation, which we will seek to develop and deepen to include all cultural aspects, including literature, cinema and various performances and visual arts, we affirm the keenness of the two countries, more than ever before, to strengthen cooperation between them, for the common interest of our two people” Dr. Lubana Mshaweh added.

Mrs. Radyanti fauzi, President of the Diplomatic Club of Syria, and the wife of the Indonesian Ambassador, told Syria Times: “The aim of this exhibition is to introduce the Indonesian cultural heritage to the friendly people of Syria and to provide them information about how unique this art is in Indonesia, since they have a high sense of art and culture” Mrs. Radyanti said.

“This exhibition introduces the artwork of each area of Indonesia and presents it as special woven pieces that narrate the story of the ancestors,” she added.

“Hope all Syrians enjoyed it and hope they got more information about Indonesia to bring us together people to people and country to country,” she said.
