In memory of the parliament’s martyrs, the People’s Assembly: The 29th of May is a timeless epic in the journey of the Syrian people’s heroism
The People’s Assembly (parliament) affirmed that the 29th of May 1945 embodied an immortal epic in the book of the heroics of the proud Syrian Arab people, as the men of the Syrian Parliament garrison at the time refused to salute the flag of the brutal French occupier, and sacrificed their lives and blood in defense of the dignity and pride of their country.
In a statement it issued today on the occasion of the seventy-eighth anniversary of the martyrdom of the parliament’s garrison, the Parliament stated that the French at that time fired their shells at the parliament building, destroying its façade, and their crimes extended to the bombing of the capital, Damascus, with heavy fire, which resulted in many wounded and many martyred.
The Parliament pointed out that what Syria has been exposed to today, over more than 12 years, of a fierce military, media and political war and an unjust economic blockade from the forces of evil and terrorism, led by the United States of America and the usurping Zionist entity and their agents, all of which are desperate attempts to impose a new colonial reality in the region.
The Parliament added: “The aim of all of this is to dissuade us from our principled positions advocating for just causes, and our insistence on restoring all the usurped lands and rights through the steadfastness and sacrifices of our proud Syrian people, the heroism of the brave men of our armed forces, and the wisdom of our leader, Mr. President Bashar al-Assad.”
The Council concluded its statement by directing the highest verses of honor and glorification to the souls of the great martyrs of Syria, and to the heroic men of our armed forces in all their formations who devoted the values of resistance and martyrdom with their pure lives and blood.
