Hungary rejects EU ban on Russian oil and gas imports

Budapest, (ST) – Hungary reiterated its opposition to any ban by the European Union on oil and gas imports from Russia.

“The country’s position on any oil and gas embargo has not changed and we do not support it,” Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs affirmed in an email response to Reuters’ questions.

Kovacs had announced earlier that his country is committed to the gas contracts signed with Russia. He pointed out that paying for gas in rubles would not constitute a violation of European sanctions imposed on Moscow.

The Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office also revealed that nine European countries had opened unannounced accounts in the Russian Bank to pay for natural gas in rubles. Meanwhile Hungary openly opened an account in the Russian Bank in rubles for the same purpose.
